The return of ghosts: It is said that on Samhain night, the spirits of the dead will return to earth to visit. In order to avoid being harmed by evil spirits, people would light bonfires and wear ghost costumes to scare away uninvited spirits.

The legend of the jack-o'-lantern: There is a drinking farmer Jack who was trapped in the darkness after his death. To light his way, he made a lantern out of a pumpkin and placed a piece of coal inside. In order to commemorate Jack, people began to carve pumpkins and make jack-o-lanterns on Halloween.
